What are veneers?
Veneers are tooth-shaped porcelain panels that replace your outer layer of tooth enamel. They’re one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments because they can completely change your teeth, allowing you to have the appearance you want.
Every tooth gets its own veneer, so you can get multiple veneers for a revamped smile or just a single veneer to correct a specific issue with one tooth.
What problems can veneers correct?
Usually, veneers are only for the front teeth, aka your smile teeth. The main uses for veneers include:
- Changing tooth shape
- Covering tooth cracks
- Repairing chips
- Hiding tooth gaps
- Covering stains or discoloration when teeth whitening isn’t helpful
Veneers cover only the front of your teeth. Although they’re excellent for cosmetic improvements, veneers may not be right if your main concern is strengthening your tooth.
What is the process of getting veneers?
You can get veneers in just two visits. During your first appointment at Newport Center Smile Design, Dr. Barker performs an exam and preps your tooth or teeth by lightly buffing the outermost enamel layer. This removes just enough enamel to accommodate the thin veneers.
Dr. Barker creates an impression of your tooth or teeth and sends it to the dental lab. At the end of your first appointment, you usually get a temporary veneer to wear until the custom veneer is ready.
During your second appointment, he gently loosens and removes the temporary veneer, and then uses dental cement to attach your new veneers permanently.
Do veneers need any special care?
No, veneers don’t generally need special care. Simply make sure to take good care of your teeth at home, and don’t neglect your twice-a-year dental cleanings and exams. Dr. Barker checks on your veneers at each appointment.
If your veneer loosens or falls off at any time, visit Newport Center Smile Design as soon as you can. Because your tooth is unprotected without the veneer, you could be at risk for infection and tooth damage until you get the veneer reattached.
